According to post from alexsecret on forum: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=41127&p=185018 this seems to be an Ubuntu problem and not VirtualBox problem. If so, this bug report can be closed.

Today I installed Ubuntu 11.04 guest on Windows XP sp3 host using VirtualBox 4.0.6. After install of Ubuntu I rebooted it. At Ubuntu login window I have selected "Ubuntu Classic" (to get Gnome 2.x shell) and logged in. It looks graphic card driver was not properly recognized (some strange old theme was loaded - white colored - if I am not mistaken this theme is always loaded when some problem with graphic appears). Then I installed virtualbox guest additions. Problem still persists after guest reboot. I created /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and typed in settings for "vboxvideo" driver, loged out and login and problem is solved (now I can see new theme - black colored), now I can see video driver is working correctly, so problem solved. Then I have installed unity-2d from official repository and rebooted Ubuntu guest. Now old white theme problem reappeared (most probably some kind of problem with graphic driver). I have checked System | Administration | Additional Drivers and "Oracle VM VirtualBox Guest Additions for Linux Module" is active and currently in use. I have written step-by-step instruction (how to reproduce the problem) on virtualbox.org forum, please see: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=41127&p=185018 for details.
