Web service segfaults when I try to start a machine using a local session

Description
Whenever I attempt to start a virtual machine using a local session, the web service dies with a segfault or a general protection error.
What I am attempting to do is to get any machine startup errors using the local session, then stop the machine and start it the usual way (using the remote session). Obviously this is not wise (the docs also mention this) but I am yet to find out a way to get the error message when a machine fails to start.
