Hanging on machine save - vista 64 host, ubuntu guest

I've been having problems when I try to save machine state, the progress bar says that it's working and I can hear my hard disk in use, but when it hits 100% it stops doing anything, and the estimated completion time says "A few seconds remaining" but sometimes flickers to some large value.

I have a very similar problem with VirtualBox 3.2.8 r64453 except I don't see the message flickering.

Running a Windows 7 64-bit host with a Windows 2008 64-bit guest. It is intermittent. The process is doing nothing at this point - not using CPU or making I/O reads and writes. The end of VBox.log is:

Also, once the process is terminated, VirtualBox marks the VM state as Aborted and the saved state cannot be used.
