compressing child VDI images fails on macOS host

Compressing a child VDI image on a macOS host with sudo VBoxManage modifymedium --compact fails with the error: image.vdi is not found in the media registry ('/var/root/Library/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml')

update: solved by not using sudo
