Guest can't write to partitioned raw disk

Reported by: Mikael Djurfeldt Owned by:
Component: VMM/RAW Version: VirtualBox 5.0.14
Keywords: partitionedDevice raw access Cc: mikael@…
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

I run 5.0.14 r105127 on Windows 10 with a Linux guest.

The Linux guest uses the virtualbox-guest-utils package for Debian stretch, version 5.0.14-dfsg-1.

The host has 16 GB RAM with 8 GB allocated to the guest.

Problem: With a partitionedDevice vmdk file aiming to give read-only access to a raw disk of a dual-boot installation (EFI) and read-write access to the Linux partition of the disk, I only get read-only access. The guest boots into recovery mode and the disk driver reports DMA Write errors.

If I modify the vmdk file to be a fullDevice with read-write access, the guest boots normally and has access to its partition.

I attach VBox.log and vmdk files.

(The version number in the title, 5.0.4, is a typo. It should be 5.0.14.)
