This very same problem still occurs in Macosx 10.6.8 (Darwin 10.8.0) with VBox 4.3.16 (MacbookPro, 2009 edition). The relevant error lines in the vbox.log file:
00:00:01.748232 AssertLogRel /Users/vbox/tinderbox/4.3-mac-rel/src/VBox/Devices/Graphics/DevVGA.cpp(6043) int vgaR3Construct(PDMDEVINS*, int, CFGMNODE*): RT_SUCCESS_NP(rc) 00:00:01.748253 PDMDevHlpMapMMIO2IntoR0(0x80000,) -> VERR_MAP_FAILED 00:00:01.748270 PDM: Failed to construct 'vga'/0! VERR_MAP_FAILED (-75) - Failed to map a memory object.
Reducing video memory to 128M allows the machine to start up fine. This is a working Windows 7 vbox image exported from Debian Linux 7 to the Macbook as a .ova package.
